Types of Hearing Tests
There are several different types of hearing tests that can be performed to assess an individual's hearing abilities. Some of the most common types of hearing tests include:
Pure-Tone Audiometry
Speech Audiometry
This test measures an individual's ability to hear different pitches (frequencies) of sound. The person being tested listens to a series of tones at different frequencies and loudness levels and indicates when they can hear the sound.
This test measures an individual's ability to hear and understand speech. The person being tested listens to a series of words or sentences at different loudness levels and repeats them back to the test administrator.
Tympanometry
This test assesses the function of the middle ear by measuring the movement of the eardrum in response to changes in air pressure.
Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE)
This test measures the sounds that are naturally emitted by the inner ear in response to a stimulus. It can be used to assess the health of the hair cells in the inner ear.
Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR)
Auditory steady-state response (ASSR)
This test measures the electrical activity of the auditory nerve and brainstem in response to a sound stimulus. It can be used to assess the function of the auditory nerve and brainstem.
This test measures the electrical activity of the brain in response to a steady-state sound stimulus. It can be used to assess the function of the inner ear and auditory nerve.
